Faithful / overly trusting
Gentle / lonely
Compassionate / martyr complex

Ovelia's faith is the very first introduction audiences get to the kingdom of Ivalice. She prays for mercy for the sinful children of Ivalice; even on the brink of war, when her own life is threatened to the point that her royal guard has to be supplemented with hired mercenaries, Ovelia's concern is for others, not her own safety. Her job class is based upon her 'Holy Magicks', and her 'faith' stat far surpasses her 'brave' stat. Ovelia isn't courageous, but she believes- in the goodness of her guardians, in the strength and righteousness of her allies, and in the mercy of Ivalice's god. However, this overly trusting nature also allows her to be manipulated again and again. She believes the Cardinal Delacroix will offer her asylum, and accepts that the Knights Templar's account of her birth is the truth. She trusts in Delita's visions of the future until finally she snaps due to betrayal after betrayal. Ovelia was raised to trust in higher powers (the Church and the nobility of Ivalice), and she never developed belief in herself. Her self-worth is entirely tied up in what others have told her matters (her royal blood), and it is only after she is separated from all of this that she begins to question what she believes.

Throughout the game (in her appearances as a guest in battles and in the optional rendezvous battles in the remake), Ovelia does not take up arms. She is a gentle soul, and the skills of her innate 'Princess' class are Aegis (offering protection/buffs to an ally) and Dispelna (removing harmful status ailments from an ally). Outside of battle, she is portrayed as compassionate. She tries to protect Orran Durai when he escapes his cell and hides in her room. In a world where the nobles act with callous disregard for the lower class, Ovelia breaks the mold by treating the commoners she meets as equals, asking them not to bow and trying to ensure they are treated fairly by those who hold power. This acceptance of others is partly due to her nature, but also is shaped by her loneliness. Ovelia has been locked away in monasteries until the war breaks out, and until that time, she'd had 1 friend (Alma), 1 beloved mentor (Simon), and 1 faithful knight (Agrias). She shows kindness to everyone because she is desperate for contact with anyone. Starved for attention and affection, she accepts Delita's plans and his love even though she has misgivings about his motives.

She certainly feels bitter because of her circumstances (that she has lived her life locked away, that she has been lied to about her identity, that her existence has led her country to war), but she keeps that inside of herself and doesn't let it make her mean or unfeeling. She is willing to suffer for the sake of others, and even when she is at her most lonely, she still shows compassion for her fellow Ivaliceans. Ovelia has had few friends, so she treasures each and tries to support them as best she can. The flaw with Ovelia's compassion is that she allows herself to be used by others. Perhaps as could be expected by someone raised primarily by the Church, Ovelia looks at herself as a martyr. Because her existence threatens her nephew/adopted brother's claim to the throne, she resigns herself to her imprisonment to ensure no civil unrest. When the war of succession happens anyways, she is moved around like a chess piece, and she basically gives up and tries to stop eating when she is told she is not the real princess. She sees her purpose as serving and suffering for Ivalice; when she loses that, she doesn't know how to go on.

Personality:
"God, Please help us sinful children of Ivalice."

Ovelia is introduced with this prayer at the start of the game. Though her guards urge her to depart so they can escort her safely away her monastery, she politely but firmly refuses to be rushed. Ovelia has a strong faith in the Church of Glabados, as well as in her (supposed) noble bloodline. Her strong faith allows her to cast curative magic with 'sacred light'. However, this same reliance on a higher power also instills in Ovelia a certain passivity. She prays, but she does not act. She lives out her life as a prisoner in various convents and monasteries because this is her duty as a princess. Because she believes so firmly that she must suffer isolation as a martyr for her people, she never tries to change her circumstances or take a leadership role.

"I am a daughter of House Atkascha! I'll take no orders from you!"

Ovelia's entire life is shaped by a lie- that she is a princess of the House Atkascha. Until this illusion is shattered by Folmarv's revelation that she is a replacement for the real princess, who died in infancy, she takes great pride in her bloodline and role (even while wishing she was not a princess). Her royal pride, indeed, becomes the only real armor she has when facing the world. When Delita kidnaps her at the game's opening, she is no match for him physically, but she fights back by demanding that she be unhanded by the knave. It does not work, but it is a rare moment of defiance for Ovelia. Her pride leads her to go on a hunger protest when she is kept captive by Folmarv, and to demand that Delita stop mocking her by calling her a princess once she learns the truth. At the canon point she is at, her pride is shaken, but she will still use the 'stubborn princess persona' as a barrier between herself and others when she is threatened.

Even this I thought a burden light enough, if it meant the kingdom would know peace."

Ovelia has lead a lonely, sheltered life, cast off from the rest of the royal family for whom her presence is an embarrassment. Though she feels sorrow because of this, she accepts it because of her kind and gentle nature. The thought of others suffering on her behalf far outweighs her own suffering, and the war fought in her name weighs heavily on her conscious. She is a pacifist who trusts in others and who genuinely wishes for world peace even at her own expense. Her only job skills are used for healing and granting good statuses to her allies; when she is a guest in battle, she will heal or retreat rather than attack her enemies. When a tortured Orran escapes into her room, she has no power to defend him, so she instead helps him the only way she can, by begging Delita to show him kindness. In spite of her pride, she is one of the few nobles in a bloodline-obsessed society who is willing to treat all classes of people with respect. She advises them to not bow and allows those around her to call her by her name, rather than her title.

"You wish only to use me like the rest!"

Though she rarely gets the chance to meet new people, she bonds with them quickly and trusts the completely. Alma, Ramza, Agrias, and Orran all come and go from her life, but leave a lasting impression. She lets them make decisions about where she should go and how to proceed. She also naively puts her trust in Delita, and his betrayal (and what she perceives as his murder of her friends) eventually drives her to her one and only act of violence- trying to kill him to free herself and save the kingdom from his influence. Just like her resistance at the very opening of the game, she knows it is a futile attempt, and ultimately fails.

"No value even in my living."

Ovelia's self-worth wavers throughout the game. From the start, she knows her life is a burden on others: First, she is adopted by her elder half-brother as an heir because he cannot produce one; when the king finally does have a surviving son, she is an unnecessary spare heir and potential threat to the young prince; after the king's death, she is the unwilling banner behind which the puppeteers manufacture a war of succession. She combats the guilt she feels about this by trying to be the ideal princess. She suffers silently and strives to play her role. She is a model student and a pious churchgoer. She preens when she is given the chance to recite a church legend in front of a Cardinal and receive his praise.

Once she loses her identity as Ovelia, she feels deeply depressed. She could endure her isolation and guilt if it served a higher purpose. When it does not, she sees no point in any of it. She ends up clinging to the hope that Delita will change the world for the better and bring peace to Ivalice; when she realizes that he is has become no different from the nobles he deposed to gain his crown, she decides she would rather die than continue to live as a puppet.
